First look
Lucila Zentner
Pieces from this ongoing series have so far been selected as finalists in the Salon des Refusés, the Gosford Art Prize and the Muswellbrook Art Prize. This is the first solo exhibition of my kangaroos.
The Roo project began five years ago, directly influenced by one of my muses — my daughter, who made a kangaroo hat dress-up for identity day in primary school. She walked around the kitchen blindly (the eye holes were higher than her head), conjuring a magnificent enigma of how to be oneself and look at it at the same time.
In my kangaroo series I paint two themes — family member portraits, universalised by one of the masks that define us; and the irreverent roo who goes on summer holidays alone in the aqua car. He visits real places, but what you see is what he sees — not the place itself. He is lucky enough to experience, fully, the absurdity of being himself.
