'Griot' by Rob Omodiagbe

A Griot (pronounced ‘Grio’) is a West African storyteller who captivates audiences with a unique combination of poetry, prose and music. Stories large and small are intrinsic to the human experience, and their ability to engage is a preoccupation of image-maker Rob Omodiagbe.
His abstract portraits capture small moments of note rather than major events: A seven second love affair in a Soho shoe shop, a date with someone who failed to see the irony of their endless chatter during the movie ‘A Quiet Place’ or a chance encounter with Philippe Petit; the man who ‘danced’ on a tightrope strung between New York’s Twin Towers in 1974.
The distinctive new work in this exhibition reminds us that stories are everywhere — if we choose to embrace them.
