Through the use of the hand-illustrated garment of Caty Latham for Hermés, Paris – I aim to
contrast the silk piece against the sculpted form of Antonio Canova and his work, ‘Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss’, 1793. The carré used in this work, ‘Ferronnerie’
(1970) is one of over 50 that Latham had illustrated for Maison Hermés.
The subject of high-end fashion branding and the desire and temptation to obtain such pieces, relates to the story of Psyche & Cupid. Psyche, in her naivety and temptation, is poisoned by a flask containing the potion of beauty despite being instructed not to and is revived by Cupid after falling in love with her, despite being sent by his mother, Venus, to
punish her.
