Lucila Zentner leads a double life, both sides of it visual. By day a radiologist and nuclear-medicine specialist who reads images through a medical lens; in the studio, an oil painter who conjures them from imagination. An Archibald finalist in 2025, she paints to stay present in the moment — to see things, as she puts it, as a painting, a visual poem.
Her subjects are family, universalised behind kangaroo masks that at once conceal and reveal, and a lone kangaroo-hatted figure who travels the country on his own. She paints flowers, trees and waterways she loves, and portraits for the endless fascination of the human face — never cities. “Time is a thief, and painting is my defence,” she writes. “I paint to prolong a moment — for the sheer love.”
Since she began painting in 2015, Zentner has been a finalist in more than twenty national prizes, most for portraiture, among them the Archibald, Portia Geach, Doug Moran and the BP Portrait Award (UK). Her work is held in private collections across Australia, the USA and the United Kingdom, in the Gippsland Art Gallery permanent collection, and in commissions for St John of God Hospital and the Lucas Community Centre in Ballarat.
