'Treading Water' by Simon Brown - 16th March 2026
‘These works simultaneously engage with themes of global and deeply personal significance.
Undulating ocean landscapes work to evoke a sense of environmental upheaval and mirror personal experience of anxiety and a tumultuous inner landscape.
Reference sculptures, initially made out paper, are made permanent in oil and canvas before being deconstructed. Each resulting work stands as a meticulous translation of a
sculptural form, brought to life mindfully in a process itself that tends to the anxieties they represent.
This body of work, depicting crumpled and manipulated paper forms, additionally reflects an appreciation for the illusory capacity of paint and the tradition of trompe l’oeil painting. Together, these works form a quiet meditation on uncertainty, where global environmental unease and personal anxiety intertwine.’
