Stephen Williams.
Born in Albury, NSW · Lives and works in Sydney
Winner of multiple People's Choice awards · Works in private collections in Australia and overseas
Stephen Williams gives visual form to the complexities of contemporary life. His central subject is the modern city, at once dark, seductive, and beguiling. Born and raised in Albury and now based in Sydney, he paints as an outsider looking in, using atmospheric colour, fractured line, and passages left almost bare to convey a sense of dislocation.
His figurative works move indoors, offering a calm counterpoint to the energy of the cityscapes. These are quiet interiors of lone women, as alluring and restless as the streets outside. Drawn to twilight and darkness, and often blurring the line between representation and abstraction, Williams brings drama, tension, and personality to every canvas.
He has been a finalist in many significant Australian art prizes, among them the Paddington, Lethbridge 20000, and Korea Australia Arts Foundation prizes, and has won several People's Choice awards. His works are held in private collections in Australia and overseas. For Williams, the work is a visual diary, a personal record of thought and emotion viewed through a detached lens, and a search for belonging, identity, and a sense of place.
