Caspar Jansen.

Caspar Jansen is a German-born painter who lives and works in Mallorca, Spain. His work builds an unmistakable, luminous palette through an interplay of transparent, semi-transparent and opaque layers of colour.

He paints in several layers of material and acrylic colour, mostly with spatulas and brushes — sometimes adding spray paint, oil pastel or charcoal detail. He begins with structure layers that define the first textures, then builds rough colour layers to establish the mood and palette, before working out the composition and reducing the overall image with further passes of paint: some thick, allowing fractures and cracks to form; some thin as a glaze.

Into many of the works held in Sydney, Caspar has integrated copper foils — fine textures and shining passages that interact with the light and shift as the day changes. He works wet-in-wet to create soft transitions, and connects colour fields with dripping paint until the picture finds its balance. His inspiration comes from the colours of Mallorca — its people, language, music, nature and joy of life — and each work matures over several weeks in his Mallorca studio.
